ALL-CIAA FOOTBALL TEAMS
HAMPTON, Va. — Three Lincoln University defensive players garnered All-CIAA First Team honors on Wednesday, while one player earned All-CIAA Second Team honors.
Defensive linemen
Tim Green (Fanwood, N.J./Scotch Plains-Fanwood HS) (JR, 6-1, 215, Fanwood, N.J.) and linebackers
Daron Jones (Baltimore, Md./Cardinal Gibbons HS) (SR, 5-10, 185, Baltimore, Md.) and
Brandon McElwee (Gloucester City, N.J./Gloucester City Junior and Senior HS) (SR, 6-1, 200, Gloucester City, N.J.) were selected to the All-CIAA Defensive First Team, while wide receiver
Matthew Coston (Queens, N.Y./Dover HS) (JR, 6-1, 174, JR, Queens, N.Y.) earned All-CIAA Offensive Second Team honors.
Green had a remarkable season on the defensive line. He led the conference and NCAA Division II with 15.5 sacks. Green finished with 56 tackles, including 42 solos. He registered a team-high 23 tackles for a loss of 136 yards. Green also added three forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, two pass breakups and one safety.
Jones, a two-time CIAA Linebacker of the Week selection, was second on the team in tackles with 110, including 70 solos. He had 13 tackles for a loss of 46 yards. Jones, who was third in tackles in the CIAA, recorded seven sacks for 36 yards. He had three pass breakups, two quarterback hurries and one forced fumble. The highlight of the season for Jones was three interception returns for touchdowns. He scored touchdowns against Kentucky State, Virginia Union and Chowan.
McElwee, who ranked second in the CIAA in tackles, paced the Lions defense with 114 tackles, including a team-high 79 solos. He added 10 tackles for a loss of 53 yards and five sacks for a loss of 19 yards. McElwee also registered one forced fumble, one pass breakup and had one interception – against Cheyney.
Coston, who was third in receiving yards per game and fifth in receptions per game in the CIAA, led the Lions in scoring with 42 points. He caught 54 passes for a team-high 821 yards, averaging 15.2 yards per reception. Coston found the endzone seven times.
Elizabeth City State's Daronte McNeill took CIAA Offensive Player of the Year honors, while the duo of Alton Keaton and Dominique Fitzgerald of Winston-Salem State earned the CIAA Defensive Player of the Year and the Special Teams Player of the Year awards, respectively.
