Late-inning twist sees victory snatched

OXFORD, Pa. — Lincoln University was within one strike of securing a split with Shaw University at the Oxford Athletic Association in softball on Wednesday, but a one-run advantage quickly eroded into a 6-3 loss to the Lady Bears (14-22).

With Lincoln up 3-2, Shaw's Erica Lafadres blooped a single in front of LU center fielder Sasha Evans (Hampton, VA, Phoebus), tying the game. Two batters later with runners on second and third, Erneisha Cooper delivered the decisive blow, a fading liner to left that skidded under the glove of Sharay DuBose (Salisbury, MD, Parkside) emptying the bases for a 6-3 SU advantage, which would be the final score.

The dramatic top of the seventh overshadowed what had been a clean, well-played game. Although Lincoln mustered just three hits off of Lady Bear starter Aeriel Sanders, baserunning acumen allowed the Lincoln (7-13) women to erase a 2-0 deficit at the top of the first.

In the fourth, Erika Bell (Owings Mills, MD, Baltimore Polytechnic Institute) reached on a fielder's choice. After swiping second and third, she came home on a wild pitch. In the fifth, Dubose doubled to left and after a DeJuana Mosley (Chester, PA, Chester) single advanced Dubose to third, Mosley stole second, and Dubose raced home, beating the throw back to the plate from the shortstop in a play designed to cut down the runner heading home.

Mariah Liberty
(Vermont) replicated Bell's fourth-inning exploits in the sixth after a lead-off walk. She came home after doing most of the work herself, stealing second and third and coming home on another Sanders wild pitch.

Erin Rucker
(Shaker Heights, MD, Shaker Heights) pitched a complete game for the Lady Lions, and after the two-run first, she had an uneventful game in the circle until Shaw responded with the seventh-inning heroics. She took the loss, allowing 6 runs, 4 earned, in seven innings. Her record falls to 1-4. SU's Detra Morrow got the win, pitching scoreless sixth and seventh innings in relief of Sanders.

In the first game of the doubleheader, Lincoln lost 9-1 in a six-inning game, where the Lady Bears scored early. Lafrades led off with an inside-the-park homer to left center as part of a two-run first.

Trailing 4-0 in the bottom of the third, Evans perfectly executed the suicide squeeze. As Bell raced home, Evans dropped down the bunt right in front of the plate for the Lady Lions' lone run.

Lincoln travels to Goldey-Beacom College on Thursday before hosting Saint Paul's on Saturday at the Oxford Athletic Association for the final home doubleheader of the year.
